Getting Around Madeira: Buses, Car Hire & Transport

Getting around Madeira, in short

Quick answer: You can explore Madeira without a car: the island has a good network of public buses (now unified under the SIGA brand), plus taxis, cable cars and organised tours. But because Madeira is steep and spread out, renting a car gives you the most freedom to reach viewpoints, levadas and villages at your own pace. From the airport, the Aerobus and taxis run into Funchal, and a ferry or short flight connects the island to nearby Porto Santo.

Do you need a car in Madeira?

It depends on how you want to travel. If you plan to base yourself in Funchal and take day tours, you can manage well on buses, taxis and organised trips, with no need to drive. If you want to chase sunrises at Pico do Arieiro, reach quieter levada trailheads or explore the north coast on your own schedule, a rental car is the easiest option. Many visitors do a mix: buses and tours for Funchal, a car for a day or two of independent exploring.

Renting a car in Madeira

Renting a car is the best way to see Madeira at your own pace, and you can choose manual or automatic. Two things to keep in mind: the island is very steep and hilly, with long tunnels through the mountains, and parking in central Funchal is limited, so a smaller car is often easier. Book in advance, especially in summer, to get the vehicle you want and avoid queues on arrival.

Public buses in Madeira

Madeira's public buses are now unified under the SIGA brand, with a single route planner and timetables on the official SIGA Madeira portal. Three operators run the services:

  • Horários do Funchal (HF): the city buses in Funchal, plus interurban routes to places like Camacha, Curral das Freiras, Santana and Pico do Areeiro.
  • Siga Rodoeste: the western and northern routes, including Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, Calheta and Porto Moniz.
  • CAM (Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira): the eastern side, including Caniço, Santa Cruz, Machico and Porto da Cruz. CAM brings together the former SAM and EACL companies.

For fares, the Giro card is a rechargeable card that gives cheaper rides on Horários do Funchal's urban routes; you buy and top it up at kiosks and HF sales points around Funchal. On the other operators you can usually buy your ticket on board. Buses are reliable and cheap, though services to remote spots can be infrequent, so check the timetable before you set off.

Getting from the airport to Funchal

Madeira Airport sits about 20 km east of Funchal. Your options:

  • Aerobus: the airport shuttle, part of the SIGA network, runs to Funchal (Formosa) in around 50 minutes. Fares are roughly €5 one way and €8 return; confirm the current price before you travel.
  • Taxi or private transfer: the quickest door-to-door option, around 20 to 25 minutes to central Funchal.
  • Rental car: handy if you are driving straight out to explore.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are widely available in Funchal and around the island, and are the easy choice for the airport or short hops, though they work out expensive for longer trips as they charge by the kilometre with extra fees for luggage. There is no Uber in Madeira. Bolt operates, mainly in and around Funchal, but the number of cars is capped by local rules, so availability is limited and wait times can be long outside the city.

Cable cars

Madeira's cable cars are both a way to travel and an attraction in their own right. The best known runs from Funchal's seafront up to Monte, saving you a steep climb and giving wide views over the city and bay. Other cable cars serve spots such as Cabo Girão and Fajã dos Padres.

Guided tours, tourist buses and tuk-tuks

If you would rather not plan the logistics, organised options make it easy. Full and half-day guided tours cover the island's highlights with a driver and guide, hop-on hop-off tourist buses loop Funchal's main sights, and tuk-tuks and segways offer a fun way to see the city centre. These are a good fit if you want to sit back and let someone else drive the mountain roads.

Cycling

Both Madeira and Porto Santo suit cyclists, from relaxed rides along the seafront to challenging mountain and trail routes. Rental companies make it easy to pick up a bike, including e-bikes, which take the sting out of Madeira's hills.

Getting to Porto Santo

Madeira's sister island, Porto Santo, is known for its long golden beach and is an easy trip:

  • Ferry: the "Lobo Marinho", operated by Porto Santo Line, crosses in about 2 hours 30 minutes. It runs daily, except on Tuesdays from October to June. Check the operator for vehicle and luggage details.
  • Flight: Binter runs short inter-island flights of around 25 minutes, with several services a day.
