Driving, Renting a Car and Parking in Madeira
Driving in Madeira, in short
Do you need a car in Madeira?
For reaching viewpoints, levada trailheads and remote villages at your own pace, a car is the easiest option. If you plan to stay in Funchal and take tours, you can manage on buses and taxis instead. Many visitors rent a car only for the days they head out of the city. For the full picture of buses, taxis and transfers, see our guide to getting around Madeira.
Renting a car in Madeira
- Book in advance: rates and availability are much better booked ahead, especially in summer, and you avoid queues at the airport.
- Choose the right car: Madeira is steep and hilly with narrow streets, so a smaller car is easier to drive and park. Automatics are worth considering for the hills.
- Check the insurance: understand exactly what the cover includes and the excess before you drive off, and consider extra cover for peace of mind.
- Check restrictions: confirm the minimum age (usually 21, often with a young-driver fee under 25), and whether you can take the car to Porto Santo by ferry if you plan to.
- Inspect the car: photograph any existing scratches or dents at pickup, as the roads are tight and knocks are common.
Driving in Madeira: roads, tunnels and tips
Madeira's road network is modern and well maintained, with fast expressways (the vias rápidas) linking the main towns through a series of long tunnels. Away from these, roads climb steeply, twist tightly and narrow quickly, especially in villages and up to viewpoints, so drive slowly and use your horn on blind bends. A few essentials:
- You drive on the right and overtake on the left.
- The roads, including the main expressways, are toll-free, unlike mainland Portugal.
- Keep some distance and use low gears on the steep descents to save your brakes.
- Fill up before heading into remote areas, as petrol stations are sparse in the mountains.
- Weather changes fast: expect fog and rain on the north side and high passes.
Parking in Funchal and around the island
Parking is the part visitors ask about most. In central Funchal, on-street parking is mostly Blue Zone (Zona Azul), which is paid:
- How it works: buy a ticket from a meter (parquímetro) and display it on the dashboard, or pay through the Frente MarFunchal app.
- When you pay: generally Monday to Friday about 08:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 14:00. It is usually free on Sundays, public holidays and overnight. Confirm current hours locally.
- Time limits and cost: the centre is often capped at around two hours, at roughly €1 to €2 per hour.
- Watch the lines: yellow lines mean no parking or stopping, and white bays marked with an "M" are reserved for residents.
For a longer or easier stay, use one of Funchal's paid car parks (near the seafront, the marina and the main shopping centres), or park a little outside the centre and walk in. If your hotel offers parking, book it in advance. Outside Funchal, parking is generally easier and often free, though popular trailheads and viewpoints fill up early in the day.
Best drives and day trips
With a car you can reach the island's best corners: the west coast to Porto Moniz and its natural pools, the peaks at Pico do Areeiro, the laurel forest and the north coast around São Vicente and Santana. Start early to enjoy the viewpoints before the tour buses arrive.
