Southern Spain & The Algarve: Road Trip

1. Day 1 Arrival in the Algarve & Drive to Mazagón

   Welcome to Portugal! Start your adventure by picking up your car at Faro airport and driving to Mazagón in Spain (about 1h35 minutes driving, via A22 and A-49 routes). If you have an early flight, we strongly recommend adding an early hotel check-in in Mazagón for a more comfortable arrival.

   • Suggestion for the day: Check in at your hotel and start enjoying the hotel's amenities, such as the pools and bars. Later in the evening, we recommend having dinner at a restaurant near your hotel. Mazagón is famous for its delicious fish dishes, like the "pescaíto frito" (a variety of small fish lightly battered and fried until crispy) or "gambas al ajillo" (prawns cooked with garlic), so you should definitely start your trip by tasting one of the region's traditional dishes!
2. Day 2 Free Day for Personal Activities (Mazagón)

   • Suggestions for the day: 
     • Relax on the beach: Mazagón boasts some of the most beautiful and uncrowded beaches in Andalusia. Playa de Mazagón is a long stretch of golden sand with crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and long walks.
     • Explore Doñana National Park: Doñana National Park is one of Europe's most important wetland reserves and a major site for migrating birds. The park is home to a variety of ecosystems, including marshes, dunes, forests, and scrubland. You can explore the park on foot, by bike, or by jeep safari.
     • Visit the Mazagón Lighthouse: The Mazagón Lighthouse, also known as Faro del Picacho, is a beautiful and historic landmark located on a cliff overlooking the sea. You can climb the lighthouse for stunning views of the coastline.
     • Drive to Seville: Located about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Mazagón, the incredible Seville sizzles with flamenco, history, and sunshine. Wander flower-filled plazas, explore the Alcázar palace's Moorish magic, and catch a fiery flamenco show at night. 
3. Day 3 Drive to Punta Umbría

   Say goodbye to Mazagón and drive to Punta Umbría (an easy 37-minute drive following the A-497 route). We advise adding early check-in to your hotel in Punta Umbría, to make your arrival more comfortable.

   • Suggestions for the day:
     • Unwind on the beach at Playa de Punta Umbría: Here you can take some time for swimming, sunbathing, or trying out windsurfing or kitesurfing.
     • Visit the town center: Punta Umbría has a charming town center with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and traditional shops and restaurants. Take some time to stroll around these charming streets.
     •  Enjoy dinner and drinks at one of Punta Umbría's many beachfront restaurants: Due to its privileged coastal location, Punta Umbría is also known for its seafood and fresh fish, such as the "arroz a la Marinera" (rice mixed with a variety of seafood), "choco frito" (fried crispy cuttlefish), or "coquinas" (small clams often steamed or sautéed with garlic, parsley, and a splash of white wine).
4. Day 4 Free Day for Personal Activities (Punta Umbría)

   • Suggestions for the day:
     • El Rompido: Drive to the town of El Rompido, a charming whitewashed village located about 20 minutes from Punta Umbría. It is known for its beautiful beaches, salt marshes, and pine forests. You can take a boat trip from El Rompido to see the Ria del Odiel estuary or explore the surrounding area by bike.
     • Santa María de la O Church: This 15th-century church is one of the oldest buildings in Punta Umbría. It's a beautiful example of Mudéjar architecture, a blend of Muslim and Christian styles.
     • Mercado de Abastos: This traditional market is a great place to buy fresh seafood, local produce, and souvenirs.
     • Natural Surroundings: Punta Umbría is surrounded by nature reserves, making it a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts. You can go hiking or biking in the Odiel Marshes nature reserve, or visit the Enebrales Natural Park, which is home to a unique juniper forest.
     • Nightlife: Punta Umbría has a lively nightlife scene, especially during the summer months. There are many bars and clubs in the town center where you can enjoy a drink and dance the night away.
5. Day 5 Drive to Islantilla

   Bid farewell to Punta Umbría and start driving to Islantilla (about 45 minutes driving following the A-49 route). If you want to enjoy your hotel's amenities as soon as you arrive, we suggest adding early check-in to your hotel in Islantilla.

   • Suggestions for the day:
     • Playa Islantilla: Start your day with a relaxing beach session in Islantilla. The golden sands and gentle waves are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or simply soaking up the sunshine. If you're interested in water sports, there are plenty of options available in Islantilla, including surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.
     • Islantilla Town Center: In the afternoon, head into the charming town center of Islantilla. Explore the shops and restaurants, or stroll along the La Antilla Boardwalk, enjoying the sea views and fresh air.
     • Local flavors: In the evening, savor fresh seafood at one of the many beachfront restaurants. Some of the traditional dishes here include the "pescado a la planca", which is grilled fish seasoned with olive oil, salt, and sometimes herbs, or the "salmorejo", a creamier version of gazpacho, normally served with chopped ham and hard-boiled egg.
6. Day 6 Free Day for Personal Activities (Islantilla)

   • Suggestions for the day:
     • Ayamonte: Pick up your rental car and head to the historic town of Ayamonte, located about a 20-minute drive from Islantilla. Explore the narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses, visit the impressive 16th-century Castle, and admire the panoramic views from the Parador Nacional Hotel.
     • Isla Cristina Fish Market: Experience the vibrant atmosphere and fresh catches at the Isla Cristina Fish Market, located about a 20-minute drive away. Sample local seafood delicacies or stock up on fresh ingredients for a delicious home-cooked meal.
     • Niebla: Journey back in time by visiting the historic town of Niebla, located about an hour's drive away. Explore the imposing Moorish castle, wander through the charming cobbled streets, and admire the Gothic architecture.
     • Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders): Venture underground and discover the fascinating Cave of Wonders near Aracena (about a 1.5-hour drive). This network of caves boasts stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and prehistoric paintings.
     • In the evening, return to Islantilla and enjoy a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant.
7. Day 7 Drive to the Algarve

   Say goodbye to Spain and drive to the Algarve, in Portugal (1 hour and 20 minutes drive following the A22 route). To make your arrival to the Algarve more comfortable, consider adding a hotel early check-in.

   • Suggestions for the day:
     • Explore Lagos: Unveil the charm of Lagos and kickstart your Algarve adventure!
       • Black and White Coffee Shop: Awaken your senses with a delightful coffee at the charming Black and White Coffee Shop.
       • Camilo Beach: Dive into the turquoise waters at Camilo Beach. Descend the charming wooden staircase and discover this hidden gem, where dramatic cliffs meet pristine sands.
       • Ponta da Piedade: Discover the breathtaking rock formations and caves of Ponta da Piedade.
       • Sunset in Cabo de São Vicente, Sagres: Stand at the edge of Europe at Cabo de São Vicente. Here, witness a mesmerizing sunset as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a magical glow on the dramatic cliffs of Sagres.
8. Day 8 Free Day for Personal Activities (Algarve)

   • Suggestions for the day:
     • Explore Albufeira City Center: Step back in time in Albufeira's charming city center. Wander along cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses, browse local shops brimming with character, and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. 
     • Pescadores Beach: Meaning "Fishermen's Beach" in Portuguese, this popular beach is located in the heart of Albufeira. A small beach with golden sand and clear waters, making it a perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing. This beach is also surrounded by cliffs and caves, which add to its natural beauty.
     • Oura Beach: A vibrant beach known for its exciting water sports. Parasail high above the turquoise waters, jet ski along the coastline, or test your balance on a banana boat.
     • São Rafael Beach: Tucked away along the coast, this picturesque beach boasts golden sands, clear waters, and intriguing rock formations that beg to be explored. Perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing in a stunning natural setting.
     • Olhos da Água Beach: Here, cool, freshwater springs bubble up right through the golden sand (best observed when the tide is low), creating a refreshing contrast to the warm sunshine. Feel the invigorating mix of salty ocean and natural springs.
