Madeira New Year's Eve: Fireworks Guide & Where to Watch

✈️ THE SHORT VERSION

At midnight on December 31, fireworks go up all around Funchal's bay, so the whole amphitheater of the city lights up at once. The show lasts about eight minutes. For New Year's Eve 2006 to 2007, Guinness World Records recognized it as the largest fireworks display in the world, a title it kept until 2012. Watch from Parque de Santa Catarina for the party, from a hilltop viewpoint such as Pico dos Barcelos for the full panorama, or from the water. It is the busiest night of the Madeira winter, so book early.

This guide covers the fireworks, the best places to watch them, the days around New Year, the weather and how to plan the trip.

The Fireworks: What to Expect

Funchal is built on a slope that rises from the sea like an amphitheater, and the fireworks use that shape. Instead of a single launch site, they are fired from many points around the bay and the hills, so the whole city seems to light up at the same moment. The display lasts about eight minutes.

For New Year's Eve 2025 to 2026, the Port of Funchal reported about 22 tonnes of pyrotechnics and 97,000 fireworks, with more than 30,000 people watching from the port area alone. Eleven cruise ships and a sailing ship were anchored in the bay that night.

New Year’s Eve fireworks illuminate Funchal and its bay on Madeira Island, Portugal. Red and white bursts rise above the city’s hillside neighbourhoods, rooftops and palm trees during the annual celebration.

The show has a record behind it. Guinness World Records recognized Funchal's display as the world's largest fireworks display for New Year's Eve 2006 to 2007, and Madeira held the title until 2012. The record has since moved on, but the setting is what makes Funchal special: few places let you watch from the sea, the seafront and the hills at once.

Tips for the night:
  • Arrive early, especially at Santa Catarina and on the seafront. Funchal fills up and the best spots go hours before midnight.
  • Expect heavy traffic and very limited parking. If you are staying in central Funchal, walk.
  • Bring a light jacket. Nights are mild, but it is cooler on the hills and on the water.
  • Check the official program in December, since the timing of concerts can change from year to year.

Weather on New Year's Eve

Madeira is one of the mildest places in Europe to spend New Year's Eve outdoors. In Funchal, the average December low is about 15.5°C (60°F) and the high about 21°C (70°F), from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals. December is also one of the wetter months, with rain on about 9 days, so pack a rain jacket in case a shower passes.

How to Plan New Year's Eve in Madeira

Pros:

  • One of Europe's best-known New Year's fireworks displays, in a natural setting few cities can match.
  • Mild weather for a night outdoors in late December.
  • You can combine it with Christmas lights, levada walks and island drives in the same trip.

Cons:

  • It is the most expensive and busiest week of the Madeira winter for flights and hotels.
  • The city is crowded on the night, with traffic and closed or full parking.
  • December weather can change fast, and wind can occasionally disrupt flights into Madeira.

When to book: as early as possible. Hotels with a bay view and New Year's Eve dinners are the first to go.

Where to stay: central Funchal or the Lido and seafront area, so you can walk to the fireworks and back. A hotel with a bay view lets you watch from your balcony.

How long: five to seven nights is a good length to cover New Year's Eve, a day or two of recovery and some time to explore the island.
