✈️ THE SHORT VERSION

The Algarve's most photographed beaches are the small coves between Lagos and Albufeira, such as Praia de Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo and Praia da Marinha. For long walks and space, choose Praia da Falésia, Meia Praia or Praia de Alvor. Families do well at Praia do Barril and Praia de Alvor, and surfers head to the west coast at Arrifana and Odeceixe. Many of the cove beaches have steep stairs and small car parks, so arrive early in summer.

This guide groups the 15 best beaches by region, with access, facilities and who each beach suits.

  • Check the tide: small beaches like Estudantes shrink at high tide, while low tide opens passages at Três Irmãos.
  • Swim where lifeguards are on duty: most beaches have lifeguards only in peak season, and the west coast has stronger currents.
  • Bring shoes for stairs: many of the most famous beaches are reached by long staircases or steep paths.
  • Go in late spring or early autumn: May, June and September are warm with fewer crowds than July and August.
