The Algarve is one of the easiest places in Europe for a family beach holiday: short drives from Faro Airport, sandy beaches with calm corners, water parks, a marine park and plenty of family-friendly resorts. The central Algarve, around Albufeira, Vilamoura and Carvoeiro, puts you closest to the big attractions, while Lagos and Sagres in the west and Tavira in the east are quieter. June and September are the best months for most families, with warm weather and fewer crowds than July and August.
This guide covers the best things to do with kids, family-friendly beaches, where to stay and practical tips.

5. Dolphin watching and boat trips
Boat trips are a highlight for most children. Dolphin trips from Lagos and Albufeira last around two to two and a half hours, and combined dolphin and cave trips show the cliffs and grottoes too. Catamarans are steadier and often have a toilet on board, which helps with younger children.
CAVES & DOLPHIN WATCHING FROM ALBUFEIRA
A family boat trip from Albufeira Marina that combines dolphin watching with a visit to the sea caves.

Near Tavira, a small train runs across the dunes of Ilha de Tavira to Praia do Barril, a beach with calm, shallow water and an old anchor cemetery behind the sand. You can also walk the 1.3 km path.
7. Island hopping in the Ria Formosa
Boats from Olhão and Faro cross the calm lagoon to the islands of Armona, Culatra and Deserta, with long beaches and no traffic. The lagoon is the calmest water for children who get seasick.
RIA FORMOSA 3 ISLANDS TOUR
A boat tour from Olhão through the Ria Formosa lagoon, stopping at three islands, including Armona or Deserta and Culatra.

| Praia de Vilamoura | Vilamoura | Sheltered by the marina breakwater, accessible facilities |
| Praia do Carvoeiro | Carvoeiro | Small cove in the village centre, cafés behind the sand |

Tips for an Algarve Family Holiday
- When to go: June and September have warm weather and a warm sea with fewer crowds. July and August are hottest and busiest. Spring and autumn suit families who prefer exploring to swimming.
- Sun: the sun is strong from spring to autumn. Plan beach time for the morning and late afternoon, with shade in the middle of the day.
- Getting around: a rental car makes it much easier to reach the attractions and beaches between towns. Rental companies provide child seats on request.
- Car seats: children under 135 cm must travel in an approved child seat.
- Water shoes: useful on rocky coves and around rock pools.
- Meals: Portuguese restaurants are welcoming to children, and many have simple grilled fish, chicken and chips.
